In Costume

A bird does not question why it is a bird- at least I don't think it does. It does not wonder why it is a bird and not a tree or a lion- at least I don't think it does. Yet I do know plenty of humans that use plenty of energy wondering why they are not like this human or that human. Admiring beauty is one thing- forgetting about how magnificent you are and longing to be like someone else is a true waste of your precious energy.

I feel for the youngsters growing up in today's world. They have the constant reminder that they are not good enough. They are encouraged to wear extensions in their hair, fake eyelashes, plenty of makeup and keep up with the latest fashion. I agree dressing up and being fashionable is nice and can be fun but sometimes when we are in constant costume we can forget about what is underneath- or worse, start to hate what is underneath.

A few years ago a friend asked me if I could help her out. She is a makeup artist and had a photo shoot to take part in and she asked if I would volunteer to have my makeup and hair done and have my photo taken professionally- let me just say I'm not a huge fan of having my photo taken. Anyway, I agreed to help this friend out so she gave me instructions on how to treat my skin for the next week and to have my hair washed but not blow dried or styled- hey I can do that. So off we went.

I never imagined there would be other people there! We got into a huge studio with 15 other girls. Each of us in our simplicity of no makeup and none of us had our hair styled. In the chair I went- each of us our own makeup and hair stylist- and 5 hours later- yes you read that correctly- 5 hours later each of had been fully transformed. When I looked at myself I could not believe the transformation! Who was this person staring back at me? When I looked around I was shocked to see how different each of us looked from when we had first walked in!

I still have the picture taken from that day. It does not look like me at all. And I could never, ever spend 5 hours to get ready- I'm a 20 minutes kind of girl. So what is my point with all of this? Know the difference between who you are and what you can transform yourself to be. The model you admire in that advertisement has a group of people working on them. Their hair, makeup and clothing has been carefully put together and then the effects of photography and touch ups can transform a being into someone they didn't even know they can be. Don't waste your time, energy and money on keeping you insecure. Enjoy fashion, enjoy make up and clothes but do not let it help you feel like you are not beautiful without any of it!

The bird has its pretty colors naturally and does not take hours to get ready trying to look like a branch or a lion. We can learn plenty from nature.
